This temporary decision became implemented on February, 21st 2016 by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) following the request of several airlines and pilots unions. It should be enforced by April, 1st 2016. New packing requirements should become implemented in 2018.

Reminder of the regulations concerning lithium-ion batteries

According to the National Transportation Safety Board, the Asiana Airlines 747F crash in 2011 was the direct consequence of the poor conditioning of these batteries. Other incidents linked to Lithium-ion batteries have occurred and forced several companies to stop their carriage.

Considerations to note:

  • Lithium-ion batteries will continue as authorized in cargo planes provided that they are charged no higher than 30%, as stipulated under the conditions of acceptance by airlines company.
  • Carry-on electronic devices (laptops, mobile phones, etc.) will remain authorized for onboard passenger aircraft.
