Top 30 container ports in the world in 2023

Dubai, the largest container port in the Middle East, has returned to the top 10 of the world's container ports, overtaking Hong Kong and Rotterdam.

Hong Kong has lost a third of its container traffic over the last decade, recording its seventh consecutive year of volume declines.

Rotterdam suffered the near-total loss of Russian cargo and a major contraction in demand from European consumers, resulting in volumes down 9% on 2019 levels.

The port of New York/New Jersey saw the biggest decline. With throughput down almost 18% on the previous year, the port dropped four places in the rankings to 21st position.

Qingdao, Asia's first fully automated port, recorded the biggest increase of all the world's major ports of entry.

The Moroccan port of Tanger Med is the second fastest growing port in the top 30 in 2023. According to Alphaliner, Africa's largest container port has seen an 80% increase in volumes since 2019. With the introduction of the European Union Emissions Trading Scheme this year and 90% of liner shipping rerouted to avoid Houthi attacks and bypass the Cape of Good Hope and pass through Morocco from Asia to Europe, throughput growth at African ports this year is expected to be very significant.
